Multan is the main city of Southern Central Punjab province. The city has an access through 13 gates, whose imposing structures are still preserved. Multan has always enjoyed a great importance in the past. Multan is known to be the oldest living city and even became the abode of Sufism in South East Asia. Today, Multan is a combination of the old and new Pakistan culture. Multan is Pakistan’s third largest city by area and it is fifth largest by population.
The ancient city was site of the renowned Hindu Multan Sun Temple, and was besieged by Alexander the Great during the Mallian Campaign. Multan was one of the most important trading centers of medieval Islamic India, and attracted a multitude of Sufi mystics in the 11th and 12th centuries, earning the city the sobriquet “City of Saints”. The city, along with the nearby city of Uch, is renowned for its large number of Sufi shrines dating from that era.
Multan is called “The Mango city” for a reason, as its stiflingly hot climate provides the fruit a perfect environment to ripe into juiciest, thickest and the most aromatic mangoes in the world. It is one of the hottest cities of the country. It features an arid climate with very hot summers and cold winters. The city witnesses some of the most extreme temperatures in the country. Recorded-breaking highest temperature of 50 °C (122 °F) was recorded on 27 May 2010.
